Grubb Ventures to make Raleigh's Winn-Dixie building into warehouse

“Small businesses getting squeezed out of downtown Raleigh will soon have a repurposed warehouse to relocate or expand their operations. What many know as the Winn-Dixie building on East Whitaker Mill Road is being transformed by Grubb Ventures of Raleigh.

So far, $2 million has been allotted for the initial phase of revamping the 180,000-square-foot building, of which the roof and canopy awning by the loading dock has recently been replaced.

According to Sam Crutchfield of Grubb Ventures, the space will be repurposed for maker-entrepreneurs and small businesses, especially those who don't fit the typical office-space profile. The company's idea further fits into the new district of breweries cropping up in the area, with Blackjack Brewing Co. currently renovating the space to begin brewing later next year.

"Downtown Raleigh is really on fire right now but a lot of small businesses are getting squeezed out," he says. "Our hope is this would be a fun place for them to land. It's a great gateway down to the Five Points area, and over to the Oakwood area. It'll be quasi-retail and manufacturing."“
